Crossing the bridge over the Annalee River, just outside Ballyhaise, Co Cavan, on Sunday morning was a treacherous affair. A very heavy frost on Saturday night turned cars, grass and trees white. Early arrivals for the uneven ages All-Ireland cross country championships found the carpark resembling a skating rink and the course, unlike the muck in Ballinakill, was white and hard. Thankfully the early morning sun brought a welcome thaw so that by the starting time of the first race at noon, conditions had greatly improved.
